Arizona Climate Resilience Corps (AZCRC) Member

The Southwest Fire Science Consortium (SWFSC) and the Arizona Wildfire Initiative (AZWI) at Northern Arizona University’s School of Forestry (NAU) seek to hire up to eight Americorps Arizona Climate Resilience Corps (AZCRC) members to support science communication, public outreach, public education and student success on the topic of wildland fire. 

We are hiring several flexible part-time positions for the following projects: 

  • Fire Ecology Learning Lab The Fire Ecology Learning Lab is a curriculum for middle school students and learning modules for informal educators. We are looking for two or more people to translate the curriculum into Spanish, develop a module about Indigenous perspectives on natural resource stewardship, and to assist a professional curricula developer with making this curriculum appropriate for other grade levels. In addition to developing new curricula, these positions will lead teacher trainings and conduct school visits to teach and test the curriculum. 
  • Fire Science Communications – Work with the SWFSC and AZWI Outreach Team to create science communication products on various topics. This will include social media outreach, organizing and developing webinars with partners, summarizing scientific literature into brief reports, creating visualizations and figures that summarize important aspects of fire science for diverse audiences, and/or creating short documentary-style videos and GIS Storymaps. This will also include supporting facilitation of working groups and meetings and other tasks to support SWFSC and AZWI. What creative communications skills do you have or are you looking to build? 
  • Technician for Community Preparedness – We are looking for one or two people to support our AZWI community preparedness team with education and outreach to diverse groups across Arizona that support community needs before, during, and after wildfire. Tasks will include working as a technician for social science by helping to manage community information, contacting communities to learn more about their current efforts to adapt to wildfire, helping with the review and distillation of community and policy documents to help communities navigate funding opportunities and programs, and assisting in public outreach through the organization of workshops and community meetings. 
  • Student Success – Assist the AZWI Education Team in creating educational and social events for students across NAU. This position will create engaging promotional materials for diverse audiences, create resource guides for students, help the team develop creative social media campaigns, and participate with projects and in meetings and events that support and promote the AZWI.  

Details: You must live in Arizona and have an interest in wildland fire. Jobs will begin as early as October 2024 with flexible hours (15-30+/wk) for as short as three months and for as long as one year. Work schedules are flexible; this is the perfect job for recent college grads looking to build skills and gain work experience, college students looking for work during the school year and over the holidays, and teachers wanting supplemental income outside teaching duties. We are looking for people with curiosity, a desire to learn and work in a high-paced team environment, and the ability to work independently with guidance from a mentor. 

Benefits & Compensation: Members are paid biweekly starting at $19.56 per hour. Members will receive on-the-job training and experience and access to the Americorps network. Those who complete their term will receive a Segal Education Award. Find out more here

Skills & interests: The ideal candidates will fulfill at least one or more of the following qualifications (you do not need to fulfill all these requirements, just one!).   • Communications degree, coursework, or work experience: graphic design, journalism, data visualization, story map/GIS 
  • Forestry, biological sciences, natural resources, sustainability, science communication degree, coursework, or work experience  
  • Research assistant: ability to assist in social science research, conduct interviews, public engagement, and community outreach 
  • Educators: teaching, curriculum development 
  • Language skills: verbal and written abilities in Spanish or an Indigenous language (to Southwest) 
  • Administrative tasks: meeting planning and logistics, preparation of display materials, tracking projects and activities in spreadsheet or collaborative software 
  • Marketing: familiarity in social media, online trends, and event planning
